The Golden HourSo if you don’t know much about photography, you’re probably wondering what the heck I’m babbling about now.  I’m talking about the magical hours around sunrise and sunset where the light gets so ideal that you can shoot anything and your pictures come out with a soft glow of lovliness.

If you’re shooting on your home turf, you’ve probably figured out these times on your own.  But they do vary by season and you’re not always on your home turf.  What if you need to know when the golden hours are in your vacation spot?

The internet of course, the source of all knowledge and wisdom!  Go to The Golden Hour calculator.  It knows where you are now and will tell you where your local golden hours are.  So if you go there from your vaca spot, it’ll show you when you should be out at the beach taking pictures of the surf and eventually the sunrise or sunset.

It’s a handy way to plan some great shutterbugging.  So check out your golden hours then get out there and get some great pics.  Or at least give yourself a better chance at some great pics!

I got a Mac Mini when I had just lost a job and the laptop I’d used there.  I thought to myself, “I need a computer and I don’t think I’ll need to be portable; I’ll get a mini.”  It was cute, but it only had 2 gig of RAM so it felt pain when I booted anything Adobe.  And it cried when I tried to use Entourage (which I just don’t do to any machine anymore).  Well…it fit the bill for a few weeks, then the reality set in.

I’m used to being very portable.  It was frustrating to not be able to lay across the bed and type away.  I couldn’t go out on the patio to send a zillion resumes and watch my email feverishly for replies.  As soon as I could, I got a used Macbook (black) and life was sort of back to normal.  But I had an extra computer; what to do with it?

I thought long and hard before declaring a favorite gadget, but I think my little Canon Elph SD1000 has to be “the one.”  Not only does the new model come in pink, and I’ve been itching to review a pink gadget, but it’s a staple in my grab-and-go purse.

Canon SD1100

As you see in the post title, I’ve updated the name to the model you can now buy but the review will discuss the 1000 that I have.  You’ll see as I post, I’m primarily a geek on two fronts–computers and cameras.  I’m finally in the market for a DSLR – I’ve been pining for one for years – but this little guy will remain my faithful companion.

There are three main reasons for this – quality, size and price.  This little guy is a trooper.  I throw him in my purse and he never disappoints.  He’s always by my side ready to catch the quirky, the unexpected, and the fun.  Right now I carry the smallest purse ever and he tucks neatly inside with my wallet, iPhone and keys.  And unlike most of my gadgets, I’ve had this guy for three years and I’m not itching to trade him in for a newer, shinier and better model.  He still does his work really well.
